The Board of Trustees has chosen a furnace contractor and we are on his list. Temporary heaters are to be installed this weekend and that will help to dry out the building even more. Wood studs are @ 14.5%, not dry enough to insulate and sheetroock over yet. Electrical work continues, and the fire alarm system is temporarily reconnected. Loose floor tiles have been removed, so when the time comes, carpeting can be glued to a dry secure surface.

STATUS UPDATE as of Sat. 10/15/11

Thanks to many great volunteers, all the water soaked and mud coated stuff has been removed from the building. Keep finding little pockets of goop, but that's minimal. Water, power, phone/fax, and WiFi internet have been restored. JA has loaned me a computer so you can return books here again. The studs have been tested for moisture, but they are not dry enough yet to put the walls back together. The furnaces in the cellar are ruined and must be replaced, so it's a little chilly in here. Suburban brought us a new propane tank today and got the remaining furnace in the attic working, so I hope that with some fans going, some of that heat will make it downstairs. The (replaced) dehumidifier and sump pump in the cellar work constantly, but the ground is SO saturated, water continually oozes in through the fieldstone walls. I wish everything was back to normal, but it will be a long time before it is. I'm there most every day, so stop in and say hello - I miss you guys!

Since so many of you have asked, here's my Volunteers Wish List
of things that still need to be done at the Schoharie Library.
1. all the nails bent down where they come through from the siding
(to prep for new insulation)
2. ~~last several pieces of drywall removed~~
3. ~~several sand tubes emptied and carried up from the cellar~~
4. plaster walls in the original part of the building checked and
any loose/bubbling areas scraped off
5. ~~bottom 2 or 3 wooden shelves rewashed after plaster checked~~
6. ~~remaining mud removed from the cellar (not very much left, honest)~~
7. ~~brick walkway edged and cleaned so the bricks can be read again~~

We made progress!

The Schoharie Free Library and the Middleburgh Library in Schoharie County need your help to rebuild their recently damaged book collections. Schoharie Library lost the bottom two plus shelves throughout and Middleburgh lost the bottom one plus shelves due to Hurricane Irene damage.
Three local independent bookstores have established funds to help them purchase replacement titles. Your donations in any dollar amount will be greatly appreciated. At the moment, the Schoharie Library doesn't have enough space to store the books you would like to give to us. I stand corrected that the space I thought was available is not, so please do not ship any books to MVLS, either. We need to replace furnaces, carpeting and shelving before any books find their new homes. We are working on creating a list of the books that we know we need to replace and will post the list as soon as it is available. We would appreciate donations of replacements for the books we lost. The Library and I deeply appreciate your concern and best wishes.

CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!

Due to water damage from Irene, the Library is closed. The closest functioning library at this time is Community Library on Union Street in Cobleskill. We had the cellar entirely full of mud and water and 27" of the same on the first floor. Water was restored Thursday afternoon, but the power won't be hooked back up until after the building wiring is repaired and passes inspection. We are very grateful for all the patrons, friends, and passers-by who have all helped in so many ways. We will be back!

Irish Dance returns to the Library, featuring our very own Rosie, on Saturday August 6 @ 11am. Kate Watson and her daughter Brigid teach Irish step and ceili dance to anyone enthusiastic enough to try at their studio in Sharon Springs. Iona Troupe performs at many area venues and has danced at Branson, MO. Next big trip will be to Virginia Beach!

Tales 'n Tunes

Musical and storytelling duo Carol Connolly and Don Darmer, together as "Tales 'n Tunes," presented "World Passport," their program for this year's Summer Reading Program "One World, Many Stories." Kids clapped and sang and roared their way through songs and stories from other countries, then replenished the lost calories with cookies made from recipes of some of those countries.

Local History/Railroading Book

For local history and railroad buffs, Len Kilian presented a program about his new book “Smoke Under Vroman’s Nose: A Photographic Memoir of Railroading and Everyday Life in the Schoharie Valley.” Mr. Kilian worked with the late Ed Scribner and many others to record the doings of the Schoharie Valley Railroad and the Middleburgh and Schoharie Railroad. Fox Creek Farm CSA Program & Raffle

Come learn more about Community Supported Agriculture from Sara and Raymond Luhrman of Fox Creek Farm. On this night we will open the raffle for a 2011 CSA membership, valued at over $560, to benefit the Schoharie Free Library. The drawing will be on May 12th. CSA membership is an excellent way to support local agriculture, reduce food miles, and to provide healthy, fresh and wholesome vegetables for you and your family or friends. It also connects you with the place your food is grown and with the people who grew it.

A share in the CSA entitles the winner to a vegetable pick-up weekly in season at the site of their choosing. The vegetables are all produced organically on our farm in Gallupville. The farmers plan a week’s share to be enough for a family of four or two vegetarian adults. The vegetables are what is in season and what is split evenly over all the members. Members assume some risk because of weather or crop failure, but Fox Creek Farm, going on its 8th year, has an excellent record of maintaining satisfied members by growing a variety of crops with careful practices.

Sites include Gallupville, Altamont, Delmar, Schenectady and Delmar. The new CSA member must simply pick a permanent site on the membership form and pick-up their vegetables at the designated time (usually 4-6:00 p.m.) and day (either Tuesday or Friday, dependent on site). The season runs from about the beginning of June until the end of October.

There is no work requirement; however, the new member is entitled to all CSA activities and events including our Garlic Harvest Festival, potlucks and workshops. We also have an extensive U-Pick, free to members, with cherry tomatoes, flowers and culinary herbs. Membership also gives you access to one of the most beautiful, least known spots in Schoharie County, where you can picnic, hike, or see how your food is grown anytime during the season.

Girl Scouts Storytime

Our local Girl Scout troop will entertain kids during spring break by dressing up as the characters from the books they will be reading. Following the stories will be craft time that follows the theme of the day. Tuesday's theme is "It's All About Bugs," Thursday's theme is "Magic Wand Making" (and it's NOT just for girls, either!), and Friday's craft is "Make Your Own Bookmark." All programs run from 1:00-2:30 and are free to the public. Please come and support your friends and neighbors.

What a Week!

Came in on Monday and the furnace in the downstairs front rooms was blowing cold air. RJDowns came and installed a stop-gap glow plug until they can get the correct part.
Thursday the lift decided to go up by itself. Glenn and his helper replaced a bad button.
Also Thursday the WiFi decided to not connect to the internet. MidTel to the rescue on that one.
Friday the grouted joints in the entryway landing started popping up, probably due to water/ice from the weather. That's a warm weather fix, so it will have to look unfinished for a while.
I hope bad things come in fours, not threes; I'd hate to think we were starting another triple play.

Monday February 7th @ 7pm

Nationally recognized photographer , NASA scientist and father of our own Laura Rosenthal will present photos from around the world, bringing together his rocket-science background with his passion for nature, art and people.

Joe has also donated a framed and signed piece of his work titled "Serengeti Nap" (#1 of 15) for a fund-raising library raffle. Tickets are only $5 each and the drawing will be right after his program. The photo may be seen in person at the Circulation Desk.

Come to the Schoharie Free Library on Thursday February 3rd @ 7pm and Trustee Jody DeJong will show you how to download free e-audiobooks from the Library’s service, NetLibrary. If you have a wifi-enabled laptop, bring it along and use the Library’s free WiFi hotspot. If you don’t have a library card to use, we can issue you one that very evening; you will need your driver’s license or other photo ID.

Hooray - it snowed! As anyone who has ever come into the building knows, i LOVE snow! I spent the majority of my childhood up in Watertown, NY, so I come by it naturally.
I went to a Workshop @ MVLS on Thursday about adding Library message to Facebook and smart phones. Anyone have any opinions on that? We were also told we need to blog more, at least once a week. Let me konw what you think about that, too.

Failed Furnace

Family Digital Photos for Christmas

As part of Christmastime in Schoharie, the Library will be taking digital family photos on Saturday December 4th from 10am-noon. See the sign-up sheet at the Circulation Desk for available 10 minute time slots. Backgrounds offered are traditional garland or winter wonderland with white batting and snowballs. Photos will be burned to a CD what you can take home with you and use anyway you want(cards, keepsakes, ornaments, etc.).

“A lucky break, an idea, a business - Applied BioPhysics”

On Monday October 4th, Schoharie resident Charles Keese will appear at the Schoharie Library. His talk will describe how he and Nobel Laureate Ivar Giaever first discovered an instrumental method to study both normal and cancer cells at General Electric’s Research and Development Center and their journey to commercialize the device.

Today, Applied BioPhysics, located in the Rensselaer Technology Park in East Greenbush, manufactures the ECIS (electric cell-substrate impedance sensing) system that finds use in many biomedical research laboratories throughout the world.

Charlie Keese graduated from Cobleskill High School in 1962 and received his BS degree in physics from SUNY Albany and his Ph.D. degree in biology from RPI. For several years he taught at SUNY Cobleskill and then joined GE R&D in 1984 as a research scientist and the Department of Biology at RPI in 1989 as a senior research scientist. In 1991, with Ivar Giaever, he co-founded Applied BioPhysics and now serves as the company president.

Charlie and his wife Kathy make their home on Stony Brook Road in Schoharie.

Splash! Into New York State Water Science

Thursday July 8th @ 7pm. This program is presented by Carol Smalley and in this 90-minute hands-on program, participants will experience water with their senses; perform an auditory rain-making activity (while learning about the importance of water to all living things);
croak with the frogs (including the wood frog, the state amphibian) while creating their own musical notation system to record the sounds of nature; explore the physics of water by devising a musical water xylophone (to accompany the frogs); capture a moment of water time using haiku (based on the River of Words poetry project); and experiment with Gyotaku, the Japanese art of fish printing (with a replica of a trout, the state fish).

Author signatures have been collected by the New York State Reading Association and worked into a unique work of art. The NYS Reading Association is raising money for the Central Asia Institute. Founded by Greg Mortenson, author of “Three Cups of Tea,” the Institute builds and supports schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Tickets will be sold through Thursday March 4th, and the winners will be chosen March 8th.

Christmastime in Schoharie

The theme this year was Trains and Snowflakes, kind of a weird combination, but we made it work.

The craft tables were awash in glitter (still getting vacuumed out of the carpeting!) for the snowflakes...

Ziggy the Zigster Returned!

Ziggy, the miniature performing horse owned and trained by Michele VonLinden, returned to show us his new tricks and some of his favorite old ones, too. He also brought a copy of his book "Ziigy Visits the Library" to give to the lucky raffle winner, and another one to give to the Library.

Notice his new sneakers, especially good for when he visits nursing homes - those floors are slippery!

Ice Cream Recipe

I have had many requests for the Ice Cream recipe handout from the "What's the Scoop?" Scotia-Glenville Children's Museum program, so here it is!

Vanilla Ice Cream: Mix together in a clean 13-0z. coffee can 1 cup heavy cream, 1 cup whole milk, 1/4 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons vanilla. Put the lid on and place the can in a clean 34-oz. coffee can. Fill the remaining space in the large can with chopped ice and cover the ice with about 1/3 cup salt. Put on the lid and place the can on the floor. Roll the can back and forth for 7-10 minutes. Open up both cans. Scrape down the sides of the smaller can and replace the lid. Fill the outer can with more crushed ice and salt and replace the lid. Roll the can for about 7 more minutes. Serve immediately or freeze until later. Makes 8 small servings. [for Strawberry Ice Cream, use 1 cup heavy cream, 1 cup whole milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 2 tablespoons sugar and 8 oz. crushed frozen strawberries with sugar]

We had 3 new trees/shrubs planted by Guernsey's Nursery yesterday to replace the giant dying pine trees that were safely cut down. The trees are red oaks, and generations to come will get to admire them in all their full-grown glory; we'll just muddle along as they grow...

Saturday March 28th @ 11 am, the author/illustrator of children's book will be returning to the Schoharie Library. This time, he will show a PowerPoint of his trip to Alaska (the state is celebrrating it's 50th anniversary!) featuring Denali, Fairbanks, grizzly bears and the Arctic National wildlife Refuge with 70,000 caribou. After that, he will demonstrate how to draw Alaskan Animals and help everyone make drawings of their own.

No. it's the next program from the Scotia-Glenville Traveling Museum to be held on Friday Feb. 20th @ 1 p.m. Presenter Kathleen Curtis will discuss many insights about real lizards and bring colorful wooden lizards made by Zapotec Indians as well. Steve Krasner Writing Workshop

I can tell you there was a LOT of enthusiastic "verbal participation" for parts of it, but I trusted the grownups to keep him under control!

Board Trustee Don Quinn was the guest of honor at a Book Launch Party hosted at the Schoharie Library by Friends and Family of the author. Don read from his first hardcover/published book titled "St. Maverick's." Don donated an autographed copy to the Library, so everyone will have a chance to read it.

As a part of the "Catch the Reading Bug" Summer Reading Program, I bought an AntWorks farm from ThinkGeek.com. The harvester ants are living in a nutritious gel developed by NASA for experiments in space. I unplug the LEDs while the Library is closed, so the ants gets some "down time."

Emily Davis, renowned spelunker and bat expert, will speak at the Schoharie Library on Thursday June 19th @ 7 pm. Her topic will be white-nose syndrome in bats, which is the apparent cause for many overwintering deaths in caves in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut.

Skip West (from Wocester, NY) will play and sing and dance a concert at the Schoharie Free Library on Saturday June 7th at 10:30 a.m. A winner of the Parents Choice Gold Award for Children's Music, Skip plays guitar, mountain dulcimer, banjo, trombone, ocean drum and kalimba (thumb piano). He'll have us all singing, dancing, moving, and playing authentic instruments from other countries!

Voter Proposition - on the Schoharie Free Library
On the May 20 ballot there is a proposition that would authorize Schoharie Central School District to collect $55,000 annually to support and maintain the Schoharie Free Library. The current library levy is $50,000 and has been that amount for five years. The request for an additional $5,000 annually is to help the library defray rising costs of operating the facility. It is estimated that if approved, the additional cost to taxpayers would be two to three cents per thousand dollars of assessment.
Public Budget Vote, Tuesday May 20th, 9am-9pm at the school. Please show your support for the Library!!

"The Senator's Wife" Book Discussion

A book discussion of “The Senator’s Wife” by Sue Miller will be held at the Schoharie Library’s Eaton Community Room on Thursday May 1st from 7-9 pm. It will be led by Marcy McKinley, who declares this book “timely!” It is about a retired, multiple-philandering U.S. senator, his wife, and the young couple who live in the other half of a two-family house. The novel explores possible reasons for the behavior of political wives (for example, Silda Spitzer) and is bound to bring out some lively opinions.

Computer Classes for Beginners

Taught by Janet Spies, classes are for 4 consecutive Thursdays (3/20, 3/27, 4/3 and 4/10) at either 10am-noon OR 6-8 pm. Space is extremely limited, so sign up at the Desk ASAP. Successful Jailbreak!

I was escorted to the pool-side jail at the Best Western by a Volunteer Deputy, loaned a cell phone to make my one call, photographed, had my money counted and itemized, was given a last meal and then was released - what a relief!

Thanks to all of you I raised $600, which is enough to send one of Jerry's Kids to camp for a whole week. Congratulations!

Help Me with "Operation Paperback"

I have just signed up to participate in Operation Paperback. I read about it in another library's newsletter and it sounds great. As their website says, "We collect gently used books and send them to American troops deployed overseas."
Please help by bringing in paperbacks that fulfill the requirements below - TELL ME THE BOOKS ARE TO GO TO OPERATION PAPERBACK - otherwise, they'll probably wind up in the Book Sale!
